Before settling at our universities, we -Els, Katrien and Lennart- dropped by at Oklahoma University for a Fulbright Gateway Orientation. Not only did we hear everything about our Fulbright benefits and responsibility, we were also introduced in the US academic culture and how to cope with the culture shock that might follow after this awesome event. We visited the Oklahoma State Capital, where the Former Secretary of State introduced us into the US politics and we had a tour in the OU football stadium – including the luxurious locker rooms. We concluded this great event with a cultural dinner, in which Native Americans performed some of their sacred dances and showed us how to play stickball.
Apart from the tight schedule, we enjoyed networking with the other Fulbright grantees, who were all having similar experiences. Some were studying or doing research in areas close to ours, others were going to universities close to ours. And more importantly, we found lots of couches to stay on in case we travel anywhere in the US! See you soon, guys!
