Celebrating Thanksgiving in Belgium

IMG_2094e Despite the recent dark days of security threats and general unease, Fulbright grantees and alumni joined Deputy Chief of Mission Mark Storella of the U.S. Embassy to Belgium, at his generous invitation, to celebrate life, community, and happier days ahead at their annual Thanksgiving dinner. Minister of State Herman De Croo, the longest-serving Belgian Member of Parliament and a Fulbright alumnus, attended as guest of honor and gave a short speech extolling the virtues and continued importance of the Fulbright program to Belgium-U.S. relations. IMG_2086IMG_2092 After further words by Mr. Storella and Fulbright Executive Director Erica Lutes, grantees, alumni, and government officials enjoyed the opportunity to discuss and relate over a beautiful Thanksgiving meal in the best American tradition. By undertaking the annual American rite of joyfully giving thanks for what they hold most dear, the Fulbrighters demonstrated their defiance of the climate of fear, distrust, and paralysis that today’s antagonists surely hope to spread.
