The following awards are NOT awarded by the Commission for Educational Exchange (i.e. they are non-Commission scholarships). This list of non-Commission scholarships represents only a selection of various awards which do exist. Detailed information on scholarships in specialized fields is available in the Advising Center of the Commission for Educational Exchange in the Royal Library in Brussels. American Association of University Women International Fellowships These awards provide the funding for a year of graduate study or postdoctoral research at an American university for non-American women. Funding is also available for serving as a scholar in residence at a U.S. university. Applications must be postmarked by or before December 1st of the year preceding funding:
AAUW Educational Foundation Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F.) The B.A.E.F. awards grants for graduate study and post-doctoral research to citizens of Belgium. Candidates must apply within four years of having completed their degree at a Belgian university. Grants are for one year and cover tuition, living expenses, and health insurance. The B.A.E.F. also awards conditional grants up to a maximum of $86,000 payable over a period of two academic years to Belgian students wishing to obtain an M.B.A. in the United States. Postgraduate fellowships for biomedical or biotechnology research in the U.S. are also offered. Deadline date for final applications: October 31. Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF)
Commissariat Général aux Relations Internationales de la Communauté Française de Belgique (C.G.R.I.) The C.G.R.I. offers each year a limited number of awards for study or teaching in the state of Louisiana: § tuition waivers for a maximum of one year of study in a public university in Louisiana. Open to students in all fields except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law or intensive English. Candidates must also apply directly to a Louisiana university for admission. The application deadline for this program is 1 November. § Grants-in-aid in the amount of $4,000 plus a tuition waiver for post-graduate study at a public university in Louisiana. Round-trip travel will be paid by the C.G.R.I. Open to candidates in all fields of study except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law or intensive English. The application deadline for this program is 1 November. § tuition waivers for a maximum of one year of study at Centenary College of Louisiana. Open to students in all fields except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law or intensive English. The application deadline for this program is 1 November. § French-language teaching assistant. Successful candidates will be placed in a university in Louisiana, where they act as French-language teaching assistants. Grant includes a monthly stipend (nine months) and a tuition waiver from the university, and travel from the C.G.R.I. Deadline date for the four programs is November 1. C.G.R.I.
Council of International Programs (C.I.P.) The C.I.P. offers internships in fields of human services, such as public administration, law, education, journalism, health and environment. These short-term programs of three to six months begin in September, January or May of each year. They are awarded to successful, mid-career professionals interested in promoting mutual understanding and skill development in their field. The Duesberg-Baily Foundation A scholarship of approx. € 6.000 will be awarded each academic year to a graduate of the University of Liège and the Athénée Royal Thil Lorrain de Verviers who wishes to continue study in the United States or Japan. Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (F.N.R.S.) The F.N.R.S. offers various postdoctoral research grants to researchers and professors of the Wallonia-Brussels Community. Applications for grants for research abroad for a maximum of twelve months must be submitted by March 1st of the preceding academic year. F.N.R.S. also offers grants for scientific conferences in the U.S. Requests must be submitted at least three months before the date of the conference. Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (F.W.O.) The F.W.O. offers grants to students, professors and researchers of the Vlaamse Gemeenschap involving pre- or postdoctoral research abroad (NOT to obtain a degree or diploma) for a maximum of ten months. Georgia Rotary Student Program The Rotary Clubs of the State of Georgia offer approximately 50 scholarships each year to students wishing to study at the undergraduate level in Georgia. A few scholarships are available to students for study at the graduate level. Grants cover tuition and living costs for one academic year. Hughes Predoctoral Fellowships in Biological Sciences Intended for students in the biological sciences who have completed less than one year of graduate study, 66 fellowships will be awarded for full-time study toward a Ph.D. or Sc.D. International Fellowships in Medical Education (IFME) Up to twenty fellowships are awarded annually. Applicants will be accepted for study periods of six months to one year. Eligible study area include: educational methodology, curriculum design, evaluation systems, medical school governance, development of basic and clinical science department, and the design and operation of health care and public health system programs linked to medical education. Priority will be given to mid-career full-time medical school faculty who teach in the basic sciences or clinical specialities and who are preparing to assume increasing educational responsibilities in the development of their departments or their schools, and faculty who are designing or implementing changes in the medical education system of their schools or countries. National Humanities Center The competition for fellowships at the National Humanities Center is open to humanistic scholars from all nations. In addition to supporting scholars of recognized accomplishment, the Center awards fellowships to promising young scholars who are no more than ten years beyond graduate study and are undertaking projects significantly beyond their dissertation research. Most fellowships are awarded for an academic year, though a few are available for a single semester. The Population Council The Population Council offers pre- and post-doctoral grants for a maximum period of 12 months for research in the field of population studies (economic, sociological, anthropological, geographical, political or administrative aspects). Fellowships cover travel, required tuition (if any), part of the research costs, health insurance, and a stipend for living expenses. Apply by December 1 to:

Rotary Scholarships The Rotary Foundation offers three types of scholarships: Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship; the Multi-year Ambassadorial Scholarship and the Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship. The first two grants are open to everyone except "...for unsupervised research, medical internship or residency, or for employment on a full-time basis in the host country". In all cases, the Rotary Foundation Trustees assign candidates to an institution. More information about Rotary may be found on the Rotary Web site The general requirement stipulate that: a student must have completed at least two years of university course work candidate in practical training or vocational fields must have a high school diploma and worked for at least two years in a recognized vocation. 1. Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarship One academic year (9 months). The grant of a maximum of $22,000 covers round-trip transportation between the home and host country; a month of intensive English if required by Rotary; fees for books & supplies; minimum living costs and limited incidentals. 2. Multi-year Ambassadorial Scholarship Two or 3 years depending on availability through the sponsoring sector. The grant of $11,000 per year is designed to meet costs of enrolling in and attending a university. The student must go to a university that offers a program directly in relation to his/her field of study. 3. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship Candidates must have studied English for at least one year at the university level. Three or 6 months depending on availability through the sponsoring agency. A period of three months is attractive for those who have reached a certain knowledge in the language. The six month term is appropriate for a candidate who wishes to study a language presenting a high level of difficulty. The grant of $10,000 (3 months) and $17,000 (6 months) covers round-trip transportation to and from the applicant's country, tuition, fees, limited living expenses. " The availability and types of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship are determined by each Rotary district and vary from year to year. Candidates must contact their local Rotary clubs to determine if and what kind of scholarships are available, to ask about local application deadlines, and to obtain application materials." Candidates or their families may not be members of the Rotary. Apply by the end of February (18 months before departure) to the Rotary Club in your area (see local phone book). Candidates from District 217 must apply by November 15 (2 years prior to departure). Science and Engineering Research Associateships Approximately 450 full-time Associateships for recent Ph.D. recipients and senior researchers in science and engineering will be awarded by the National Research Council. Candidates may conduct research on problems of their choice that are compatible with the interests of the 115 sponsoring laboratories. Stipends range from $27,150 to $42,000 depending on the sponsoring lab, and may be renewed for a maximum of three years. Apply before January 15, April 15, or August 15, to:
