Law - Master's Degrees in Law at American Universities*

There are no undergraduate law degrees in the United States. Prospective law students must first obtain a four‑year undergraduate degree in any field and take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) before applying to law schools. The program of studies leading to the first degree in law (Juris Doctor or J.D.; Bachelor of Law or LL.B.) lasts three years and covers the basic principles of American Common and Statute Law, Comparative Law, International Law, Business Law, and other aspects of the law.

Foreign students who have completed their degree in Law (in Belgium: Licence en Droit/Licenciaat in de Rechten) may apply to an American law school for a Master's degree program in law: the Master of Comparative Jurisprudence (M.C.J.), the Master of Comparative Law (M.C.L.), or the Master of Laws (LL.M.). Foreign applicants for Master's programs in Law are generally not required to take the LSAT.

The M.C.J., M.C.L., and LL.M. in American Law, International Comparative Law, or the general LL.M. have been designed for foreign lawyers who want to learn about the American Common Law justice system. These programs generally last one year, and often require a thesis.  Students in these programs are usually required to take one or two specific introductory courses in American Law. The bulk of the courses, however, are usually chosen by the student from the regularly offered J.D. courses.  LL.M. programs in specific fields, such as Taxation, are designed for lawyers interested in specializing in a particular area. Accordingly, the program of study may be more structured and include more required courses. An LL.M. program with a specialization is often intended for students who already have a Common Law background. Note: a Master's in Law from an American law school does not qualify the student to take the American State Bar Examinations, or practice law in the United States.

The following is a list of the names and addresses of some American law schools offering Master's programs in law open to foreign students. Included are the specific Master's degrees offered, specializations offered, the required TOEFL score for admission, the deadline dates for admission, information on financial aid available to foreign students, the relative selectivity (10/100 = ten students were admitted out of 100 applications). The information here was provided by the individual schools in response to a survey conducted in December 1991. Unless a specialization is noted, the Master's programs generally cover American Common Law. Dates for admissions, unless otherwise noted, are for the fall semester, since the majority of the programs only admit students for the fall. Schools that have no financial aid information listed may or may not provide aid or such information was not available. All law schools listed are approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).

NOTE:  Students who are applying for Scholarships in the Commission for Educational Exchange's Spring Competition should be sure to apply early to graduate law programs, in spite of the fact that many graduate law programs have late Admissions deadline dates.  Candidates for Commission awards must have proof of acceptance to an American institution by April 30th to be considered for a Fulbright Grant.
