Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
Like American students, international students must arrange to take the
SAT in the last year of their secondary studies. The SAT is administered
by the College Board, a private organization based in the United States.
The SAT is offered six times per year in Brussels (October, November,
December, January, May and June). It is advisable to take the test as
early as possible so that test results can reach the university
admissions officers before the application deadlines.
There are two types of SAT exams. The SAT I (or SAT general test) is a
multiple choice exam that assesses whether students possess the
necessary verbal and quantitative skills to succeed in university-level
studies. The SAT I takes approximately three hours and consists of seven
sections on English grammar, reading, vocabulary and mathematics. There
are sub-scores for each section and scaled scores (ranging from 200 to
800) for the verbal and mathematical sections.
The SAT II tests (or subject tests) are more specialized and enable
colleges to judge a student’s preparedness for specific courses. Each
SAT II is one hour long and the following tests are available: Writing,
Literature, American History & Social Studies, World History,
Mathematics Level IC & Mathematics level IIC, Biology E/M, Chemistry,
Physics, French Reading and Listening, German Reading and Listening,
Modern Hebrew Reading, Italian Reading, Latin Reading, Spanish Reading
and Listening and the English Language Proficiency Test (Reading and
Listening). Because Europeans are stronger in languages and science, we
recommend that students take one or several Subject Tests. This can
enhance the candidate's application. Always check the requirements of
each university in order to register for the appropriate SAT test(s).
Complete information, descriptions and application forms for these tests
are available in the Commission’s Advising Center or directly from the
SAT Central Administration: www.collegeboard.com.
