Alumni Afterwork: Bright Brussels

For our next Alumni Afterwork, please join us for a tour of the Bright Brussels Festival of Light! We will meet up for the beginning of the tour at Place Sainte-Catherine in Brussels and visit a local bar for some drinks afterward. Bright Brussels is a festival of lights, a fascinating itinerary through the city made up of about twenty interactive, playful and captivating light installations. Bright Brussels is a free event, open to all audiences from 19:00 to 23:00 for four evenings, from 13 to 16 February 2020. The route stretches towards the city's historic center from the upper part of the city through the Poelaert, Marolles, Royal Quarter and Sablon neighborhoods to the Halle Gate. We are excited to announce our next Eat&Meet at the Microsoft Innovation Center in Brussels! Are you interested in learning more about how digital policy is shaping Europe in the digital age and how the Microsoft Center in Brussels operates? Then join us for a lunch and presentation with Mark Lange, Director of EU Institutional Relations and Nevena Raczko, EU Government Affairs Coordinator at Microsoft Europe who will talk about how cutting-edge technology helps to overcome barriers of location, language, and accessibility and convene conversations on the most pressing issues impacting Europe. After the talk and lunch, we will be having a tour of the center and interactive demos of the latest technologies of Microsoft! Located on Rue Montoyer, a stone’s throw from the European Parliament, the Microsoft Center is a space which aims to advance discussions on the digital policy issues shaping Europe in the digital age. Virtual Eat&Meet on Diplomacy in the time of COVID-19 with Ambassador Gidwitz

Together with current and former Fulbrighters, we will host a Google Hangout session on diplomacy in the time of COVID-19! Join us for an open conversation with US Ambassador to Belgium, Ronald J. Gidwitz who will address any questions you may have on diplomacy in Belgium and the United States during the global health crisis. Ambassador Ronald J. Gidwitz arrived in Belgium on July 3, 2018, and presented his credentials to His Majesty King Philippe on July 4 of that year. Ambassador Gidwitz has had a long and successful career in the private sector, government, philanthropy, and civil society. Virtual Eat&Meet on Fundamental Rights and COVID-19 with Dr. Henri Nickels

We are excited to announce a Virtual Eat&Meet with Dr. Henri Nickels. Together with current and former Fulbrighters, we will host a Google Hangout session on Fundamental Rights and COVID-19! The outbreak of COVID-19 affects people’s daily life in the 27 EU Member States. As the number of infected people in the EU territory began to mount rapidly in February and March, governments put in place a raft of measures – often introduced in a period of only a few days – in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. Many of these measures reflect how, in exceptional emergency situations, the urgent need to save lives justifies restrictions on other rights, such as the freedom of movement and of assembly. This presentation will outline some of the measures EU Member States have put in place to protect public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Join us for a 45-minute Relax & Release Relaxation Training! Stress is our body’s natural way of responding to any threat or demand we experience in our lives. When left unchecked, stress affects not only our mental state, but can contribute to various health problems such as high blood pressure, breathing problems, etc. Time to Relax! Even though it is normal to feel overwhelmed by stressful events, there are easy and practical exercises you can use in your daily life to cope in a more efficient way. During this workshop we will explain and practice 3 kinds of exercises: Gentle Yoga stretches to relax your body, a breathing exercise to unwind your mind and a relaxation exercise to completely settle down. Book Club: “White Fragility”

Since 2018, the Fulbright Commission in Brussels has engaged in a diversity initiative designed to both recruit applicants of underrepresented backgrounds and to better support grantees while in-country. As part of this initiative, Executive Director Erica Lutes will be leading a virtual book club for members of our Fulbright community centering on issues of diversity, inclusion, and representation. The book club’s first session will revolve around Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism (Beacon Press, 2018).
