FAQ for U.S. Embassy Receptions
Q: How do I arrive?
A: Reception attendees may use public transportation and walk from Central Station through Parc Royale or take metro lines 1 or 5 to Arts Loi. Limited public parking is available on the street or in Arts Loi parking garage near the ING branch at Avenue des Arts 26, 1040 Etterbeek.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Since you will be received by the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium and other Embassy staff, all dress should be business professional. This means no jeans or tennis shoes. Men should wear slacks with an oxford shirt and tie or a suit; women should wear a suit, dress, or skirt or slacks with a blouse.
Q: Do I need to arrive early?
A: No. Receptions require set-up, so please do not arrive earlier than the time on the invitation you receive. However, the Ambassador usually speaks early-on in the reception, so please try not to arrive more than 15 minutes late.
Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: Your European ID or passport. Please expect to show proof of identification to a guard at the Embassy compound entrance, as well as at the Residency door. You do not need to bring gifts to the reception; you may sign the guestbook upon entering the Residence to let the Ambassador know you appreciate her hospitality. Also upon entering, there will be a coat room where you can check any bags and coats.
Q: What should I expect during the reception?
A: Receptions usually include drinks, finger foods, and speeches by the Ambassador and other relevant figures. When you meet the Ambassador, please address her as “Madam Ambassador.” Feel free to bring business cards to help you network. Most people at any reception will have a tie to the Belgian-American relationship or the respective educational communities, so if you come alone, feel free to start your conversations here.
The Embassy is strict about closing times, so please leave promptly by the reception end time indicated on your invitation.
