Fulbright Scholarships – Grants for Graduate Study (Master’s and Ph.D.)
Approximately 20 grants-in-aid and travel grants will be available for candidates who have completed their higher education and wish to study or conduct pre-doctoral research in an American university. Basic requirements to apply include:
- Belgian citizenship
- A Bachelor’s degree
- A distinction/onderscheiding each year of study or a grand distinction/grote onderscheiding in the most recent year of study
- No J-1 visa (student category) held within the past two years
Belgian citizens who did not complete their higher education in Belgium are still eligible to apply; however, they must indicate their intention to return to Belgium to continue their studies or work after the Fulbright grant has ended.
Please note: the Commission will only consider applications in this competition from students who are assured of affiliation with an accredited American university or institution of higher education for graduate-level study or pre-doctoral research. Letters of admission are not required by the March 1 application deadline, but students should provide the Commission with their acceptance letter as soon as possible and note that their funding will not be administered until it is received.
Deadline: noon on March 1, 2014
APPLICATION TIMELINE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS:
For those deadlines that fall on a weekend, please use the previous Friday at NOON (12pm) as the deadline to deliver all applications and supporting materials to the Fulbright office in Brussels.
November 1, 2013: Preliminary applications available
February 1, 2014: Deadline to submit preliminary application form (Note: the preliminary application will become available 3-months prior to deadline) consisting of biographical data (roughly 2 pages)
March 1, 2014: Final online application deadline at NOON (12pm), consisting of a 15 page application form with CV, test scores, three recommendation letters, transcripts, etc)
Mid-March 2014: 10 minute interview in English at the Commission for Educational Exchange in Brussels
Late-March 2014: Applicants notified by e-mail
Mid-June 2014: Pre-departure meeting at U.S. Embassy and reception with the U.S. Ambassador
August 2014-March 2015: Departures to the U.S.
In addition, the private awards below, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, are given upon recommendation of the Commission:
ALLEN AND OVERY AWARD
At least one partial scholarship for graduate study in the field of Law at an accredited American university.
AMBASSADOR BLINKEN AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by the Ambassador Blinken Award Fund to a graduate of a Belgian university for graduate study in business or foreign policy in the U.S.
AMBASSADOR FOX AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by the Ambassador Fox Award Fund for graduate study in any field of study in the U.S..
AMERICAN WOMEN’S CLUB OF BRUSSELS AWARD
A grant-in-aid will be offered by the American Women’s Club of Brussels to a Belgian woman nominated by the Commission.
COLUMBIA CLUB OF BELGIUM AWARD
At least one partial scholarship to a student in any field of study who will attend Columbia University.
FRESHFIELDS BRUCKHAUS DERINGER AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP to a graduate of a Belgian university for graduate study in International Business Law in the United States. More info
FULBRIGHT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARD
At least one partial award for graduate study in any field at an American university or institution of higher education.
HARVARD CLUB OF BELGIUM
At least one scholarship will be offered by the Harvard Club of Belgium to a candidate in any field of study attending Harvard University.
LIEDEKERKE, WOLTERS, WAELBROECK, KIRKPATRICK AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by Liedekerke, Wolters, Waelbroeck, Kirkpatrick to a graduate of a Belgian university for graduate study in law in the United States. More info.
LOYENS & LOEFF AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by Loyens and Loeff to a graduate of a Belgian university for graduate study in law in the United States. More info: http://www.jobsloyensloeff.be/
MARGARET NICHOLSON SCHOLARSHIP
At least one partial award for graduate study in any field at an American university or institution of higher education.
MCKINSEY SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN BUSINESS
Maximum two partial awards for graduate study leading to a Master’s degree in business administration or related fields at an accredited institution in the United States. The amount will vary according to the financial need of the candidate. Preference will be given to candidates who have proven leadership in professional or extraprofessional activities, or who have a record of community service activities.
VESUVIUS AWARD
At least one partial scholarship will be offered by the Vesuvius Award Fund for graduate study in engineering or a related field of study in the U.S..
UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARD
One or more partial scholarship to students in any field of study who will attend the University of Chicago.

CAUTION: Candidates must be available in Belgium for personal interviews IN ENGLISH on dates specified by the Commission. Under no circumstances will the Commission make awards to candidates who are already in the United States.
ATTENTION!! Scholars who have previously held a J visa in the professor or research scholar category are not eligible for sponsorship again in those two categories for a period of 24 months following the program sponsorship end date.
