Fulbright Scholarships – Grants for Professional Journalists
Deadline: NOON on MARCH 1
The Fulbright Journalism Scholarship is meant to foster mutual understanding between the United States and Belgium via journalists, who the Commission believes to be critical supporters of a democratic society. Preference is given to mid-career journalists engaged in print or broadcast journalism who wish to study for a period of three to nine months at an accredited U.S. university. Candidates who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism will also be considered.
The grant of $15,000 – $30,000 is intended to cover part of tuition and fees, books and academic supplies and room and board. J-1 visa sponsorship and sickness & accident insurance are provided by the Commission for Educational Exchange.
Candidates must:
- Be citizens of Belgium
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree
- Have ambassadorial qualities
- Have at least 2 years of professional experience in Journalism
- Demonstrate a proven level of academic and/or professional excellence
All candidates must also be proficient in English and secure admission to a specific study program and/or research project at an accredited U.S. institution.

APPLICATION TIMELINE FOR JOURNALISTS:
For those deadlines that fall on a weekend, please use the previous Friday at NOON (12pm) as the deadline to submit all applications and supporting materials online:
November 1, 2013: Competition opens, applications available
February 1, 2014: Deadline to submit preliminary application form consisting of biographical data (roughly 2 pages). (Note: the preliminary application will become available 3-months prior to deadline)
March 1, 2014: Final online application deadline at NOON (12pm), consisting of a 15 page application form with CV, three recommendation letters, transcripts, etc)
Mid-March, 2014: 10 minute interview in English at the Commission for Educational Exchange in Brussels
Late-March 2014: Applicants notified by e-mail
Mid-June 2014: Pre-departure meeting at the U.S. Embassy and reception with the U.S. Ambassador
August 2014-March 2015: Departures to the U.S.
