Brussels College Night 2012
The annual Brussels College Night was held on October 1, 2012 at ISB and attended by many families from ISB. In total, over 600 students and parents, as well as representatives from over 90 universities (with campuses in Europe as well as in the US) were present.
The evening served two purposes. First, to provide a special opportunity in Europe for students and families to interact face-to-face with admissions officers, who can provide tips about the application process. Second, allowing college admissions officers to better understand the educational context of students currently studying in Belgium. As Ruby Bhattacharya, Admissions Counselor and Director of International Recruiting at Swarthmore College, explains:
“Brussels College Night is not only an important opportunity for students in Belgium looking to apply to colleges and universities outside of Belgium, but it is also so important for those of us working in college admissions. Not only are we able to put a face to an application when we meet some of these students, but we are also able to better comprehend the student’s context by visiting Belgium and talking with its students and their parents. We are able to gain a greater understanding of who the student is and where he or she is coming from, which is so essential when we are reading through applications and trying to assess whether a student would be a good match for our institution.”
In addition to providing more general information to prospective students and their families, the event included a panel discussion on a range of issues, from financial aid to how to choose the right college. “These kinds of sessions,” says Erica Lutes, Educational Adviser at the Fulbright Commissioner in Belgium, responsible for coordinating this event, “can help to provide families with a road map for the process and are an excellent first step in gathering the right information and finding the right college or university beyond school.”
