The Fulbright Alumni Association of Belgium (FAAB) is organizing an Out&About in the city of Jette on Sunday 15 June from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM!
Before becoming a major city, Brussels was a swampy, marshy region. In fact, the city’s name is derived from an old Frankish term ‘Bruocsella’ which translates as ‘settlement in the marshes’. Today, only a few remnants of this marshy past remain, including patches of woods and natural reserves in Northwest Brussels. Starting at the train station of Jette, we will enjoy a guided tour through these areas that include the Molenbeek river, the marshes of Ganshoren and Jette, the Poelbos and Laerbeekbbos to get an idea of the unique habitats and diversity of plant and animal life. Along the way, we will stop by ‘Houblons de Bruxelles’, a hops farm in the city and discover how these unique plants are cultivated for their hop flowers, a key ingredient in beer brewing.
This will be the ideal transition to the second part of the activity, the visit of the brewery ‘Brasserie Taymans Brouwerij’, located nearby. This brewery is the rebirth of a historical brewery from Jette, active from 1906 to 1970 and has been installed in the historical buildings of the brewery. During the visit, we will discover the intricacies of the beer brewing process, including the process of producing the iconic Brussels beer style of Lambic and Gueuze. The visit will be capped with a food and beer pairing tasting where contributions of the ingredients and production process to the beer flavors and aromas will be presented and each beer will be paired with a small snack.
Cost: €20 pp. (includes guided tour and a food/beer tasting)
