Inter-Country Lecturing Program

The Fulbright Inter-Country Lecturing Program assists in funding selected Belgian institutions to invite an American Fulbright Scholar on assignment in Europe to Belgium for lecturing or attending a conference or colloquium. The Fulbright Commission in Brussels will provide an international travel grant to bring the scholar to Belgium from his/her EU host country using the most economical fare, while the Belgian host institution applying for this support will be responsible for outlining and cost-sharing the remainder of the Fulbright scholar’s expenses.

Approximately 250 American lecturers and researchers representing a variety of academic fields participate in the Fulbright Scholar Program in Europe and throughout the world. Belgian/Luxembourgish institutions can invite a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from another European country for a short stay (up to a week) through the Inter-Country Lecturing Program.

The Fulbright Inter-Country Lecturing Program provides U.S. scholars while in Europe with opportunities to enrich their professional and cultural experience outside their country of assignment, while giving educational institutions the opportunity to invite a Fulbright Scholar based in another country to their institution. 24 binational European Fulbright Commissions participate in the program: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK. Please note that grant openings may vary from country to country.

How to apply

The grants are available for U.S. Fulbright scholars and teachers residing anywhere in Europe for short lecturing visits (up to one week) to Belgium and/or Luxembourg.
The Inter-Country Travel Grant is easy to apply for and applications are reviewed by the Fulbright Commission on a rolling basis.
The Inter-Country grant funded by Fulbright covers your airfare to Belgium (or Luxembourg) and your host institution finances the local expenses (room and board).

This is how you arrange for an Inter-Country visit to Belgium or Luxembourg:

The potential host institution in Belgium should consult the list of American Fulbright scholars in Europe for a specific academic year, to identify a U.S. Fulbright scholar from a relevant academic field whom they would like to invite.
If the host has not had previous contact with an interesting scholar, the Fulbright Commission may initiate contact on host’s behalf.
Applications are accepted year-round and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Since funding for this program is limited, requests will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
